FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(June 1, 2007 – Naples, FL)  Naples-based author M. B. Weston will be signing copies of her first book, A Prophecy Forgotten, on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Mina Hemingway’s Florida Book Store located at 857 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples in the Pavillion Plaza.

A Prophecy Forgotten is the first in the Elysian Chronicles trilogy.  It’s a Tolkien-meets-Clancy fantasy novel about guardian angel warfare and treason that embodies the themes of faith, hope and living according to your purpose through the fantasy fiction story of Davian, a battle-hardened major in the special operations division of the cherubian military.  While Davian is on assignment deep in enemy territory, he is called and sent to Earth to guard seven-year-old Tommy – a boy who has been prophesied to save Earth.  Tommy is just trying to survive the second grade, persecution from bullies and the strain of his parent’s divorce.  He has no idea he could be the chosen one, or of the spiritual forces at work surrounding him.

Her next book, Out of the Shadows: Book II of the Elysian Chronicles, will be available in December 2007.

M.B.Weston is not only an award-winning writer, but also a talented and motivating speaker.  She has been scheduled as a guest speaker at many schools and events throughout Florida.

Monthly Writing Tip
Sympathetic Characters:
In order for readers to care about what happens to a character, they have to care about the character. Creating a main character whom readers relate to and like is key to creating a suspenseful story or novel. We call these types of characters—the ones readers care about, that is—sympathetic characters. Although no formula exists for creating the perfect sympathetic character, here are a few guidelines.

  • Kindness toward others: In the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jack Sparrow is a pirate who has a bit of a rum addiction. People don’t like drunken pirates, but they love Captain Jack. Why? He saves Elizabeth Swan, at risk to himself, when she falls in the water, and he tries his best not to harm Will Turner during their first sword fight. The audience can sense Jack wants to do the right thing, and they love him—despite his weaknesses. And speaking of….
  • Weaknesses: A sympathetic character needs a few. Not many people like someone who is “perfect.” (Think about it. We call them teacher’s pets and laugh at them.) Even Harry Potter has hair that won’t brush right and a slight temper.
  • Struggles: All of us struggle with doing the right thing. If it was easy, no one would be in jail. The Chronicles of Narnia’s Peter struggles with being the overbearing big brother when he relates to his siblings. Struggles make our characters human and therefore likable.

Press Release: Emerging Fantasy Fiction Author M.B.Weston’s New Series Begins with “A Prophecy Forgotten”

Contact Information:
Author: M.B. Weston (239-821-3769)
Press Release: Karole Davis (239-290-4473)

E-Mail: mbweston@elysianchronicles.com
Website: www.elysianchronicles.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(June 1, 2007 – Naples, FL)  The swelling popularity of the fantasy fiction genre has fit right in with M. B. Weston’s aspiration to publish fantasy novels.  Years of writing have culminated in the publication of this para-dimensional fantasy fiction book, entitled A Prophecy Forgotten, published in April 2007 through ArcheBooks Publishing (www.archebooks.com).  A Prophecy Forgotten is the first in the Elysian Chronicles trilogy.

Weston has a heart for children, and though her original audience for A Prophecy Forgotten was the adult reader, she found that her book resonated with younger readers as well who were excited by the fantasy world she created with undertones of good versus evil.  “I’ve written since I was small, and it has been very gratifying that I am able to reach the younger readers.”

Like many who enjoy the fantasy genre, Weston started reading it as an adolescent. She started off with fairytales, then Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.  She currently enjoys reading works by Clancy, Grisham, and of course, Rowling.  Weston enjoys making up characters and striving to give them lives that readers will care about knowing.

“My goal is to create a world that people want to visit again and again and characters that readers constantly want to read about. People want to go back to Middle Earth, Narnia, and Hogwarts. I want readers to feel the same way about Elysia.”

Weston is not only an award-winning writer, but also a talented and motivating speaker.  She has been scheduled as a guest speaker at many schools throughout Florida including Corkscrew Elementary, East Naples Middle, Laurel Oaks Elementary, Osceola Elementary, Alva Middle School, Somerset Academy in Ft. Lauderdale as well as scheduled speaking engagements at fantasy trade shows including Baton Rouge’s BabelCon in August and Tampa’s NecronomiCon in October.  She will also be a keynote speaker at the upcoming Children of Destiny conference this July in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.

Readers who enjoyed Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series will love this book.  It embodies the themes of faith, hope and living according to your purpose through the fantasy fiction story of Davian, a battle-hardened major in the special operations division of the cherubian military.

According to director/screenwriter Stephen J. Burton, “M. B. Weston captures the hearts of the reader with her wonderfully crafted world of Elysia with deep imagery, rich characters, and great emotion… a must read for all fantasy fans.  Think City of Angels meets Lord of the Rings meets Terminator 2 and you have a small taste of this new reality… can’t wait to see it on the big screen!”

Weston believes that fantasy readers who like unseen protection, prophecy and intrigue, battles and skirmishes and multi-dimensional worlds will enjoy reading A Prophecy Forgotten.

M. B. Weston is a fourth generation-born Floridian.  She attended Naples High School then went on to graduate cum laude with a B.S. in Accounting from the University of South Florida.  After spending several years working as a land development accountant, Weston began to pursue her childhood dream of a full-time career as a writer.

A Prophecy Forgotten (ISBN-10: I-59507-I69-5; ISBN-13: 978-159507-169-9) is available now. Cover art for the novel was developed and created by ArcheBooks. Weston is available for book signings or speaking engagements.  For more information, contact M.B. Weston at 239-821-3769, by email at mbweston@elysianchronicles.com or visit www.elysianchronicles.com.

I’ll use this information for the second run, which will make the book much better. The deadline is May 31st!

Monthly Writing Tip
Proofreading: Speaking of proofreading, it’s not enough to proofread your work once and consider it done. The best writers proofread their work many times. Here’s a proofreading method that will guarantee you higher Language Arts scores.

  • First, proofread for “big picture” errors, such as logic loopholes, paragraphs that don’t make sense or fully explain your thought, etc.
  • Second, try to find blah words and make them interesting. (Hint: Thesauruses do have a purpose.)
  • Third, narrow your scope to grammar & spelling errors.
  • Fourth, read the work out loud to yourself—I guarantee you’ll find mistakes.
  • Fifth, pass it on to a friend for peer editing. I do this. My advance readers are key to my writing success.
  • Finally, fix any mistakes and read it out loud again before turning it into your teacher.

Monthly Writing Tip
Sensory Details: You want the world you’ve created in your story to “haunt” your reader—to make him or her think about your world long after putting down the book and to desire to return. The author J. R. R. Tolkien excelled at this, making readers all over the world desire to be part of and return to Middle Earth. One aspect of writing that can achieve this effect, which Tolkien used quite heavily, is the addition of sensory details. You know, the details having to do with the five senses:

  • Sight
  • Sound
  • Touch
  • Taste
  • Smell

Make your reader experience more than just the plot of your story. Stimulate your reader’s mental picture. Make him shiver in the cold. Rattle her eardrums with a KABOOM! Make his mouth water, and make her hold her nose to keep out the stench. Affect your reader’s senses, and you will make your reader want to return to your world. Happy Haunting!

Monthly Writing Tip
“Said.”
When writing he/she said, amateur writers often try to use words such as quipped, bellowed, yelped, etc. instead of said. Don’t be afraid of said; readers ignore it, and editors don’t like said-synonyms. Use said unless yelled or whispered is crucial. And don’t modify said with an adverb. “Nice butt,” she said cheekily, doesn’t need cheekily. Here are a few more points:

  • Your dialogue should imply how your character speaks. Use strong dialogue, and your reader will hear the yell or the whisper without you writing yelled or whispered. Strengthen your dialogue instead of resorting to a said-synonym or, worse, an adverb.
  • You don’t need said after every speaker—just enough to clarify who’s talking.
  • Use action instead of said. I grabbed the knife. “I hate you!” doesn’t need a said (or even a yelled), and it gives your reader a better picture than “I hate you!” I said.

Monthly Writing Tip
Use strong verbs. Verbs are the backbones of sentences. Make them strong. Avoid verbs that don’t paint a picture or communicate to your reader, such as is/was, go, and put.

  • Don’t say, “The mountains were tall.” Make your mountains loom or tower. Make them .
  • Don’t make your character go to the store. Make him drive, hike, run, jog, or even fly. Don’t let your character just put something away. Have her stuff it in a drawer and slam it shut or fold it neatly before she sets it on top of the other shirts that are already organized by color.
  • Avoid verbs that need adverbs. Don’t say, “He ran quickly.” Make him race or bolt.

Using strong verbs paints a picture in your reader’s mind, and it gives you a chance to show your reader more of your character’s character.
